Spring and Summer: Ideal Seasons for St. Simons Fishing

The spring and summer months are the best times to visit St. Simons Island for fishing and crabbing. During these seasons, the weather is warm, the waters are calm, and the fish are plentiful. The warmer temperatures also bring a wide variety of species closer to shore, making it easier for anglers to land their catches.

If you're after redfish, cobia, or snapper, these months offer some of the best fishing conditions available in St. Simons Island. Additionally, crabbing from the piers—or along the shore—is an excellent activity, especially when the tide is right.

Fishing during these months also means more opportunities to explore different types of fishing in St. Simons Island. From inshore activities to offshore excursions, there’s something for everyone. Plus, if you're visiting with family, the waters are filled with abundant marine life, making it a great place to introduce kids to fishing and crabbing.

Inshore Fishing and Crabbing on St. Simons Island

The St. Simons Island Pier is a convenient spot to fish for species like redfish, trout, and sheepshead. The pier is equipped with cleaning stations with a nearby bait and tackle shop to ensure you’re ready for your adventure.

It’s the perfect spot for families and first-time anglers to fish the shallow waters for fish and crab.

Jekyll Island Pier

The Jekyll Island Pier is another great place for fishing in St. Simons Island. Situated next to the Clam Creek Picnic Area, this location is known for its peaceful surroundings and abundant marine life, offering anglers a relaxing experience.

Jekyll Island's pier is particularly great for catching fish like whiting, pompano, and flounder, and has space for multiple anglers to cast their lines.

Gascoigne Bluff

Gascoigne Bluff, located at the eastern end of Torras Causeway on St. Simons Island, is a popular spot for fishing and crabbing as well. The pier here is great for anglers looking to catch a variety of species while enjoying a picturesque view of the water. It’s also home to annual fishing tournaments which is perfect for competitive anglers and skilled enthusiasts.

Additionally, Gascoigne Bluff is quieter than other popular piers, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a more peaceful fishing experience.

Offshore Fishing Adventures

If you're looking for more of a challenge, offshore fishing in the Golden Isles offers an exciting adventure. With opportunities for solo-fishing or guided charters, St. Simons provides access to some of the best deep-sea fishing in Georgia.

Boat Rental

Renting a boat is one of the most popular ways to explore the waters around St. Simons Island. Local boat rental companies offer a range of vessels, from small fishing boats to larger ones that can accommodate your group for the day. Renting a boat gives you the freedom to explore the deeper waters of the island and try your hand at landing larger fish species like grouper, snapper, or other big game fish. Boat rentals are also ideal for anglers looking to create their own itinerary for the day. For a listing of boat rentals in St. Simons Island, click HERE

St. Simons Fishing Charters

For a more guided experience, consider booking a St. Simons Island Fishing Charter. Local captains are familiar with the best spots for deep-sea fishing and can provide you with all the equipment needed to reel in kingfish, cobia, or snapper.

Charters vary in length, so you can choose a half-day trip or a full-day adventure depending on how much time you want to spend on the water. Many charters offer specialized services, such as catering for larger groups, on-board meals, and other unique experiences such as night fishing. Deep Sea Fishing for Kingfish, Cobia, or Snapper

For the serious angler, deep-sea fishing is a top activity to do on St. Simons Island. Kingfish, cobia, and snapper are some of the most sought-after species in the area. These fish thrive in the deeper waters off the coast, making their catch more exciting and rewarding. With the help of a fishing charter, you’ll be able to head out into the Atlantic for the opportunity to reel in some of these trophy fish. Fishing and Crabbing Equipment

Whether you’re fishing from the pier or going out on a charter, make sure you have the right equipment before your excursion.

Most piers, like St. Simons Island Pier and Jekyll Island Pier, have bait and tackle shops nearby where you can rent or buy what you need. For those venturing into deeper waters, fishing charters typically provide the necessary gear and tackle to ensure a successful day on the water. For anglers looking to go crabbing, don’t forget to bring traps or a fishing net, as the crabs are plentiful around the piers and shallow waters.
